Happy Halloween, everybody! And for the writers among you, National Novel Writing Month – NaNoWriMo – begins in just a few hours. It’s been a few years since I’ve participated in this, but members of my writing group are doing it, and I guess I got caught up in the excitement of it.
Speaking for myself, I’m returning to a novella I wrote earlier this year that was so bad that I literally have to start over from scratch. Some of my friends are taking the chance to break out of their comfort zones. One is writing a rom-com. Another is writing a play about cats.
I was going to write an inspirational post, but that would render NaNoWriMo pointless when the whole point is to gave a community of friends and strangers motivate you through the writing process. Some people participate in NaNoWriMo just to get their word count in, and then discard what they’ve written. Others have taken their words all the way through to publication.
To help provide encouragement to you, dear reader, I’ll post a weekly update on my progress each Friday throughout the month of November. It’ll have triumphs. It’ll have doubts. It’ll also have many instances of me giving zero fucks over the word count itself because that’s not even the most important thing. 50,000 words is just a target to aim for. It’s important only if you’re betting money or Oreos.
Whatever you write is up to you. Just be sure to have fun with it.
